The sun is peeking out from behind the branches of a Giant Sequoia tree at Merced Grove in Yosemite National Park.  This was a very enjoyable hike with the payoff of seeing some Giant Sequoia trees at the bottom of the hill from the trailhead.

This hike is easy walking downward on a slight sloped path.  It is very relaxing and deceiving.  You do not realize the incline until you return and realize the slope is a little steeper than you anticipated.

The reward of enjoying these Giant Sequoia trees is worth the hike.  Some of them were protected with a wooden fence.  Their roots are sensitive, and there were signs to not step close to the trees.  As we have been enjoying the summer at different National Parks, it is a shame when visitors deface nature.  We are learning to take a breath and break from our busy lives to appreciate the beauty around us.

We really enjoyed looking up at these Giant Sequoia trees with the sun’s rays radianting down.  These trees are a reminder to always look up at the “Light” and to desire progressive growth in our life’s journey.

Yosemite’s Friendly Marmot

Highway 120, marmot, Tioga Rd, Tioga Road, Yosemite, Yosemite National Park

We were driving down Tioga Road on Highway 120 in Yosemite.  Our friend, Alan, was getting tired of driving, so we pulled off the side of the road so his wife could take over driving.

As Alan was walking to the side of the road, he spotted this charming Marmot!

The Marmot was sunning himself and posed for a few pictures for us. He was quite a character.  We spent about 10 to 15 minutes as he modeled different poses.  He must have been accustomed to tourists since he did not run off and was pretty friendly.

We had a wonderful time with our Marmot model!

Detwiler Fire Smoke lights up Half Dome at Yosemite

We were at Yosemite this week for a few days for our annual trip.  This photograph of Half Dome was taken at sunset on Monday, July 17, 2017.  During the day we watched as the skies gradually increased in smokiness.  By around 7 pm, the sky was almost white from the fire’s smoke.

When there is smoke from a wild fire in the sky, then it acts like a filter to create an orange/red sunlight during sunset.  I’ve photograph sunset photographs from this location previous years, and the setting sun is a combination of pink, yellow and orange on Half Dome.  But this year, the setting sunlight was more deeper orange in color due to the smoke from the wild fire.  We gathered with our friends – Jenny and Alan who discovered this “secret” spot  –  to watch the sunset at Half Dome and constantly shot many photographs.  We shared the serene sunset with a family who also enjoyed their cup of noodles by the river.  It was a bittersweet sunset – beautiful and also sad due to the intense fire burning nearby.

As always, these are “True Colors” from this sunset, and I did not alter the photograph using any software.

We are praying that this fire will be put out sooner than the projected time in the news, and no one will be hurt from the Detwiler Fire.

Sideways Waterfall – Upper Yosemite Falls

Upper Yosemite Falls

nn5a2731-copy-1Upper Yosemite Falls typically has water falling “down”.  This was photographed last year.  The wind blew hard such that the waterfall went sideways instead of down.

Sometimes our life can get blown in a different direction than we would have wanted.  We get re-routed in an unexpected direction.  We may not want to go that way, but we cannot fight the “wind” blowing us in that direction.

What should we do?  Hold on tight and trust the path given to us.  Sometimes we should not object to the path but know that all things will work out for good.  The wind teaches us to be flexible.  I know I need to learn to relax with the wind.

IMG_5067 Mariposa Grove 8.11Absolutely awesome Giant Sequoia Tree at Mariposa Grove in Yosemite National Park.  The photograph was taken in August 2011 with a Canon 7D camera.  The hike at Mariposa Grove is highly recommended and it is quite a sight viewing the massive Giant Sequoia Trees in person.

I was hiking with friends in August 2013 in Yosemite National Park. We were guided by another hiker on the trail to this Toadstool growth.  She told us the general direction where to find it, and we could not miss it.  It was very interesting to look at and was scary and huge.  We could not believe the size of it.  The growth was about 6 feet in total height on the tree trunk.  The colors were very vibrant.  This was by far the largest and most colorful Toadstool I have ever seen.

Wild Water Spray at the Top of Bridalveil Fall in Yosemite National Park

NN5A2742 CopyI have never seen a waterfall flow like this before.  It was a windy day in Yosemite National Park Valley a year ago when I took this photograph.  The water came down in amazing waves.  The waves reminded me of comets streaking thru the sky.  See the little dot at the top of the picture which is a bird flying by.  Click on the picture to see the bird soaring in the blue sky.  The spray of water almost looked like snow. The faster shutter speed (1/1250 sec) caught the detail of the fine drops falling.

NN5A3019 CopyThis was an amazing experience watching the water being blown in different directions by a strong wind at Yosemite National Park last year in July.  I could have spent the entire day watching this amazing water fall as the flow of water was different for each passing moment.  At times it seemed to almost stop flowing and then it would come down in a heavy wave.  Bridalveil Fall is 617 ft high.

I photographed this event on a Canon EOS 7D MKII with a 100-400mm zoom lens.  The lens was set at 148 mm and the exposure was f/9, 1/800 sec with the ISO at 320.

100-400mm lens, Canon, Clouds Rest, Glacier Point, Half Dome, sunset, Yosemite, Yosemite National Park

NN5A2898 CopyWonderful warm colored sunlight illuminating Clouds Rest on the upper left and part of the face of Half Dome on the right at Yosemite National Park.  The photograph was taken from Glacier Point at 8:00pm last week.  The color created by the sun during sunset and sunrise is amazingly warm tone compared to the middle of the day.  The exposure was f/5.6, 1/500 sec, and the ISO was 250.  I used a 100-400mm zoom lens and the lens was set at 400mm.  If you look closely, you can see a person standing at the top of the ridge of Clouds Rest watching the sunset.
