Great Memories of the NLCS Games at Candlestick in 1989 Before the Earthquake

This was the classic and great series between the SF Giants and the Chicago Cubs. This was game 4 of the NLCS on October 8, 1989. The weather was warm and Candlestick Park was buzzing from the sold-out crowd in attendance. It was really exciting to be at the game as Candlestick Park did not have full capacity crowds for most of its baseball games, and the weather was usually not this warm for a late afternoon game.

This was the play-off game before the World Series and the big earthquake.

What memories flood my mind while looking at these old pictures. It is thrilling to see a baseball stadium filled with real people.

I watched the 49ers play against the LA Rams at empty Levi’s Stadium. Of course during these pandemic times, the stadium did not have any fans watching. There were only the cardboard pictures of fans displayed in seats. There was a roaring fake crowd cheering as the game progressed. It is not the same to watch the game without live fans.

Then on October 17, 1989, there was the huge Loma Prieta Earthquake which shook the San Francisco Bay Area. I was in the downtown area when I experienced the tremendous shaking. Fortunately, I did not get conked on the head. I managed to stay on my feet during the severe land waves created by the earthquake out on the street and avoid falling debris from a building 60 feet away from me. In that short time, there was a great amount of destruction. Even though, this area is accustomed to earthquakes, we still were not prepared enough for this amount of shaking.

After the earthquake stopped, I could not take Bart. So I just walked and walked to get to my car. Fortunately, my family did not experience bad destruction to our property from the earthquake.

This photograph reminds us how in one moment we can be enjoying a fun championship game. Then 9 days later, we witnessed great destruction and loss.

Today, we can identify the earthquake experience with our pandemic times. These unexpectant events which result in hardships teach us to realize preparation for bad times is needed. The commonalities from these 2 events is the need for extra food, medications, bottled water, and necessities like toilet paper. Sometimes, we should not wait until the last minute to restock important supplies. If possible, we all need emergency funds to help, if we lose jobs or our home.

Lastly, having a network of family and/or friends is important regardless of our circumstances. If we have a network of people in our lives, then together we can be a lifeline to one another in an emergency.

Photos teach us about good times and subsequent hard times.

Remember the Temporary Overflow Press Area at Candlestick Park?

It was interesting to see how they installed the temporary wood tables for the press people

It was cool to see the 1989 technology with the Analog Dial Tone Phones and TV Monitors

Welcome to Candlestick Park for Game 4 of the National League Championship Series with the San Francisco Giants facing the Chicago Cubs.  The date was Sunday, October 8, 1989, and the weather was very comfortable on this Fall late afternoon.  It was such a big event that the Goodyear Blimp was flying over Candlestick Park for the game.

It was fun to photograph the additional temporary press area to accommodate the extra sports commentators.  There were no ushers or guards to keep fans away from the area.  If I were bolder, I could have went up closer to this area.  But I did not want to enter this area where I felt I did not belong.  Below this press area, there was a walkway where I set up a tripod to photograph.  This walkway was between the upper box and the upper reserve seats.  This press area was in upper reserve area behind home plate.

Notice there are parts of my press area photographs which are blurry – mostly the people.  Those were the days when we had to photograph with film.  Since the sun was setting in the late afternoon, I had to photograph with a slower shutter speed because I was using a slower speed film.  If I hand held my camera,  everything would be blurry.  But since I used a tripod, everything not moving in the picture was sharp.  I used a slower speed film to get richer colors and a sharper image.  When I used the tripod, I had to photograph quickly to stay out of other people’s way.

These press area photographs were the best that could be taken with the type of camera equipment, film, and lighting during this event in 1989.  Today, with my modern digital equipment, I could photograph better pictures at this location and circumstances due to the improvements 29 years later.  But of course, the Stick is gone, and I cannot go back to reshoot!  So even with the imperfections of these photographs, I’m glad I can look back at these photographs to remember my earlier experiences shooting at Candlestick Park.

Were you there to witness Game 4 on October 8, 1989 and the National League Championship Series with the San Francisco Giants versus the Chicago Cubs?

I had a great time photographing the Stick at that game.  This photograph was shot minutes before the beginning of the game.  I remember it was a warm clear autumn afternoon.  I photographed a series of 35mm color negative pictures before and during the game throughout Candlestick Park.

The game was great with the SF Giants winning 6-4.  They won the series 4 games to 1.

Unfortunately, they lost to the Oakland A’s for the 1989 World Series.

Reflection over these memories have provided some life lessons for me —

  • Focus more on the Victories and Accomplishments Recognizing the Weaknesses —Though it was disappointing the SF Giants lost the World Series, it was great they won the NLCS 1989 Championship.  Sometimes I am disappointed by people’s actions which offend or do not perform as I would expect.  But it is more important to appreciate and celebrate their accomplishments.
  • Support and act to help others to overcome weaknesses — Coaches have a difficult time to figure out how to get the players to reach their full potential.  Players may get physically hurt and emotionally discouraged.  It takes wisdom to know when to add pressure or ease up on demands for performance. This also applies in our day to day life in dealing with family, friends or co-worker dynamics.  I have supported the SF Giants all my life.  This dedication should also apply in our relationships.
  • Be a Coach and Get Coached —

I need photographs to remind, reflect and refresh my perspective.
