10 feet from the Edge of Horseshoe Bend

Arizona, Colorado River, Horseshoe Bend, Page Arizona, sunset

Horseshoe Bend has an incredible view if you don’t have a fear of heights. I could not get close enough to the edge to see the entire Colorado River, because I have a fear of heights. There is no protective railing. It is about a 1000 ft drop from the edge to the bottom. I set up my camera about 10 feet from the edge.  This is as close as I could be without feeling too fearful.

I watched other photographers set up their tripods right at the edge.  Watching the different people go so close to edge was pretty scary for me.  I saw one teenager doing hand stands on top of a rock not far from the edge.  There were lots of people who were not afraid to be at the edge.  My family and I were all cautious and were not daring at all to go to the edge.  My wife would not even go up 10 ft to the edge.

Even though we were not adventuous or brave enough to go to the edge, we still witnessed a fabuous sunset.  There was a large crowd at the Horseshoe Bend Overlook.  It was a nice hike (around 0.6 mi) to get to the edge.  It was great to find a comfortable rock to sit and watch the sunset.

So you don’t need to be on the edge to enjoy the wonderful sunset.  But being on the edge is a must to see the entire Horseshoe Bend.

The above sunset is real and untouched.  Hope you will be more inspired to look over the edge, even though I was afraid to do so.

How We Got Still Waters near Horseshoe Bend?

We took the raft ride in Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado River in Page, Arizona.  We were fortunate we had an experienced tour guide who sped up to pass the other rafts so we could be first.  He knew if we were first, we would be able to see the still reflections of Glen Canyon in the waters which would not be disturbed by other rafts.

This was a relaxing cruise thru Horseshoe Bend.  We saw interesting rock formations and the layered patterns in the canyon walls.

I love this reflection of the scenery taken in the morning with the tranquil waters.  This photograph is untouched with real colors.

Stay tune for my photograph I took above Horseshoe Bend and will share my experience looking down at this canyon.

Wild Wild West at Monument Valley, Navajo Nation

We went to the North Window view in Monument Valley in the Navajo Nation 3 years ago.  This photograph does look like a scene in an old time Western movie.  Monument Valley was used as the location for many Western movies which is why this photograph reminds of the American West.

The tour thru Monument Valley was fun and a little dusty.  I can understand why cowboys might wear masks just to keep the dust off their face as they rode and not just to disguise themselves during a robbery. We went in the spring time, so it was not as hot as it could be.  It was fun to hear about the different movies that were filmed there – for example – Stagecoach starring John Wayne and 2001: A Space Odyssey.  There is a long list of films which utilized the picturesque – Monument Valley.

The geography of the buttes is also interesting with the different layers, and it is fun to think about what the buttes look like.

As we look at scenic sights, it is fun to let our imaginations go to think about stories which could have happened at these locations.

As always, we enjoy real photography which is untouched.

Where is the Bear & Honey in Antelope Canyon?

One of the highlights of our trip was taking the tour in Antelope Canyon.  The tour guides were so helpful and efficient to point out the picture perfect sights as they led us thru the canyon.

Can you see the bear in the center lighted area with the dripping pot of honey on the left?

It is amazing how we can see different pictures in nature if we would only take the time to look with our imaginations.  See if you can see any different pictures during the day as you look at your surroundings.
