We recently visited relatives in Northern Ontario. My wife’s cousin is a great artist who paints. See below a link to her website!

Susan Chow’s Website

It was great hearing her suggestions for my art, and hopefully we were able to give her suggestions for her art.

We enjoyed a great time exploring the beginnings of the fall foliage during our time in Canada.

We shared some of photographs we are selling on Etsy. She was amazed when she saw my Blue Aspen Tree Magnet Pin – photograph.

She had never seen this site. I photographed this image in Vail, Colorado a few years ago. We missed the true Fall Foliage colors when we visited. I was a little disappointed. But I learned that you never know what sites you will see.

We went hiking in the late afternoon and enjoyed the bare aspen trees. What was amazing was with the shadows and the setting sun on the the white aspen trees gave us the illusion of blue trees! I was so excited to capture this image.

What is more amazing is that Susan created this image in one of her paintings without ever really seeing this. So she was so excited to see the real photograph that I happened to shoot.

It was her goal to one day find this real photograph of Blue Trees. I’m just glad I was able to show her this photograph. Remember I do not alter my photographs. So my images are real and true!

What kind of images would you like to capture? Think about nature, and what you would like to see. Just like anything, we need to plan and envision what sites we would like to find and shoot. Since I love fall foliage, there are some shots I was hoping to find on my fall foliage expedition.

Finding that scenery for a particular shot is like going on a treasure hunt. It becomes so exciting when you actually find that shot in nature.

Stay tuned to see if I found the shots I was seeking in my last trip.

See below if you are curious to see my Blue Aspen Tree Photo Magnet Pin.

Where is a good place to see Fall?

Where is a good place to experience fall? Living in San Francisco is not a good place to feel the fall season. We do not experience drastic temperature changes. We usually get Indian Summer and can get hot weather now.

I am not a expert on all locations for Fall. These leaves are interesting due to the multiple points in the leaves. Also these fall leaves have complimentary colors. They are not the typical fall colors.

When I visited Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont, I noticed many of the leaves were more orange in color.

In Northern Ontario and Michigan, the leaves can be orange. But there are some deep bright red leaves. The redness is attributed to how much sugar there is in the maple tree.

Where is a good location to experience fall? The answer is – it depends. It seems there can be slight variations in the fall colors.

What fall colors do you love? My preference is the bright red leaves. I really like the deep red I see in Northern Ontario.

Let me know what are your favorite fall colors.

We caught the tail end of the Fall Foliage at Washington Park in Denver in late October 2017 but still managed to find some Fall Colors in some of the trees. A lot of the trees lost their leaves but I was glad these did not drop off yet.

It is very fascinating looking at a Maple Leaf close up and seeing the patterns and colors. That is why the Autumn season is my favorite as far as photography. The colors of some of the leaves is unlike any other time of year and the position of the sun creates more dramatic lighting. I love the Fall season.

Have You Seen Tree Lace?

We were hiking on the Trappers Run Trail in Vail Colorado during the Fall in 2016 after the changing of the leaves.  The picture was taken later in the afternoon with the foreground in the sunlight and the background mountain in complete shade. That really helped to separate the lightly colored branches from the dark background.

When my wife saw this photograph, she automatically commented that it looked like “Tree Lace”.  The intertwining of the bare white tree branches give the effect lace. The bare branches show such unique and interesting patterns.

This just accentuates the fact there is beauty everywhere if we would only take the time to look.

Such beauty does not need to changed, and thus this photograph is untouched and real!

kw6a1663-copyThese trees were shot as we hiked on Trapper’s Run in Vail, Colorado.  We went hiking in the afternoon and enjoyed shooting these photographs of the Aspen Tree Forest.  We were disappointed that we missed the fall foliage.  But seeing the bare trees allowed us to focus more on the straightness of the tree trunks and the density of the forest.

This photograph was taken in the late afternoon.  The light for outdoor photography is usually better in the early morning or late afternoon.  The color temperature of sunlight is warmer giving more orange tones.  The sunlight has more dimension since the sun is lower on the horizon creating longer shadows.

My goal was to shoot photographs in the late afternoon.  We were also fortunate that the clouds cleared so I could photograph with the pretty blue sky.

We  loved the white tree bark with the contrasting blue sky and dark ground.  Everyone should experience the quiet and stillness of the Aspen Forest.

How I shot at Sunset on Booth Creek Trail?

kw6a2254-copyWe enjoyed a wonderful hike at Booth Creek Trail in Vail, Colorado.  Make sure to go earlier or you may not find a place to park the car.  The parking lot is small and street parking is not available.  The parking lot is not large.  The best strategy is to wait until hikers return and move the car.  There is a 3 hour limit for parking in the lot.

It is a steep trail with rocks.  You need to walk a brisk pace or you will not complete the hike within the 3 hour limit.

We took longer since we were shooting various pictures and enjoyed the scenery.  This was taken in the 3rd week of October.  Even though we missed the peak of fall foliage, we still enjoyed the scenery.

This shot was taken at sunset on our way back close to the end of the hike.  I took a bracket of 3 different exposures.  When you shoot with the sun behind, this makes the exposure tricky.  Maybe you are like my wife who did not understand what I was saying about taking the bracket with 3 different exposures – this is photography lingo.  In other words, I took 3 pictures using 3 different exposure settings to see which would give me the best photograph.  I wanted to get the long shadows with the right light.  I tried to frame the sun to partially block it with the tree so sun rays would be seen.  If I did not do this, then you would just see brightness without seeing the rays of the sun.

kw6a2270-copyWonderful hike on the Booth Creek Trail late afternoon on Tuesday, October 25, 2016.  The afternoon shadows and reflections of the sky cast a cool blue light on the white trunks of the Aspen trees in the foreground while the sunlight illuminated the bare Aspen trees on the mountain side in the background.  This juxtaposition of light was very striking as I witnessed it and had to take some photographs of it.

In Search of Fall Foliage

nn5a6562-copyWe went hiking at Matthews/Winters Park near Denver, Colorado looking for fall foliage.  We walked towards William Frederick Hayden Park on Green Mountain and traveled off on a trail up the mountain with a gulch.  It was a wonderful sunny fall day, and I was looking for a changing tree.  These leaves are in the process of changing to the fall colors.  Down towards Denver, it was still warm during the day but cool in the evenings and early mornings.  I love the shadows and the varying colors of green, yellow and a little orange.

Up towards Vail, Colorado, the fall foliage scenery is gone, and the Aspen trees are bare.  So we went down towards Denver in search of leaves.

I will be showing more photographs of the unique aftermath of fall foliage in the Rocky Mountain Range.  Even though, we missed the peak of the fall foliage in Vail, we still saw the beauty of the barren Aspen forests.  We learned there is still beauty in all stages of the seasons.  Stay tune to see my next series of photographs.

Close Fly-by Maneuvers by the Blue Angel's at Fleet Week The precision and expert maneuvers by the Blue Angels during their air shows amazed me as I was shooting the Blue Angels at the San Francisco Fleet Week. How do these fighter planes move so close to each other and not collide or touch? I appreciate the great skill and expertise of the Blue Angels every time I watch their shows. Their dedication to be the best is an inspiration to me. How often do we feel discouraged about improving ourselves in a particular skill? For me – photography has evolved a lot from the beginnings of my career. Technology has greatly improved how photographs look. There are a variety of ways we can share our photos thru Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc. The internet has provided a different dimension in the way we see our world. Today’s world provides more ways we can express creativity. I am striving to find my own road to perfect my photography expertise. This photograph reminds me not to give up on how to create my art. Expertise takes time to develop. Keep striving to be your best at what you do.
