What was on the Southside of Candlestick Park?

Do you remember the southern part of Candlestick Park. I took this shot in 1988.

I love looking at the design of the red pattern of the support beams circling the outside of the stadium.

The vintage cars in the parking lot remind us of this eta in the 80’s.

Notice the ramp which leads to other parking lot areas. It provided a safe ok walkway away from the moving cars.

Candlestick Park was a welcoming stadium. Tickets were affordable. I did not have to plan ahead to go to a game. I could spontaneously go to a game and just buy tickets to attend a SF Giants game.

Can we also learn to welcome people into our life? Are we accessible to people? Do we have walls preventing people into our lives? Do we share our experiences with others to encourage or help someone?

We can all learn from the legacy of Candlestick Park.

Late Afternoon at Candlestick Park in 1991

Gazing at the Home Plate area and experiencing the serene and quiet upper deck down the first base line before a SF Giants game in 1991. I am more relaxed now looking at the photograph than when I took the picture.  I remember I was rushing around Candlestick Park photographing the stadium before the fans came in. I waited by the gate and rushed in when the staff opened them up 2 hours before game time. When I took this photograph in 1991, I had no idea that the SF Giants and 49’ers would move to different locations and that The Stick would be torn down.

Memories are not as vivid compared to the actual time of an event. We forget details and sequence of events. We do not anticipate how places and people will change over time. This is why it is a good idea to take photos to chronicle the important events, people, and places in our life. I’m so glad that we now can take photos so easily with our cell phones.

I’m really thankful I have my collection of Candlestick Park photographs. Candlestick Park represented a turning point in my life. It was not only the place where I enjoyed watching the SF Giants play baseball, but it was also the place where I found my love of art in photography. I still love to photograph other baseball stadiums in the same manner I did when I was at Candlestick Park. But Candlestick Park was my first love. Stay tuned – I still have a lot more of the old photographs to scan and share.

Did You Notice the Night Glow at Candlestick Park?

This is an exterior view of Candlestick Park’s upper concourse level during a night game. Candlestick Park had a distinctive look that separated it out from all the other stadiums.

I used high speed Kodak T-Max 35mm film to take this picture. The film holds up well enough though there is a lot of grain in the picture. I used this film a lot for my night photography pictures.

Do you see the head of the fan looking out from the upper concourse level?  My wife loves this picture, but she did not notice the person until I told her. There were a few concession stands in this area, though there were more in the lower concourse.  The light in this walk way gave a unique glow to the Stick.  It is interesting to see the contrast of the shadows and light glow in the night.  It gave an interesting perspective under the upper concourse seating area.  This is another example of “chiaroscuro” which is the strong contrasts between light and dark.

It reminds me that art can be found anywhere if we will look.  I love finding art in stadiums.  It would be nice if I could continue this journey of photographing art in different stadiums in the future.

Twilight at Candlestick Park in 1989

Welcome to Candlestick Park in 1989. The SF Giants played the LA Dodgers this night and the Dodgers were taking batting practice. This was a comfortable evening as the wind was calm and it was not cold and foggy. This brings back nice memories of relaxing and watching batting practice at The Stick. With the batting cage in place, you could daydream and not have to worry about getting hit by a foul ball during batting practice. I am looking forward to baseball at AT&T in a couple of months. I also look forward to relaxing and watching batting practice there too.

Welcome to Batting Practice at Candlestick Park

The photograph was taken from the Upper Box seating area down the 1st base side. Some of the SF Giants players were warming up playing catch in the foul area down the 1st base side while the San Diego Padres were taking batting practice in the field. This was a great spot to see what was going on on the field. If you look at the bottom of the photograph, you can see a couple of the Luxury Boxes skylight windows. I am looking forward to the upcoming baseball season and hearing the crack of the bats hitting the balls during batting practice and the game.

I took the photograph with high speed Kodak 35mm T-Max Black and White film. This is why the picture has the grainy look. I used this film because this was a night game. I needed a more light sensitive film, since there would be little or no daylight when the game started. I used this film a lot in the past and was happy with its results.

If I were to take this same picture today with a digital camera, I would just need to boost up the ISO which would make the camera sensor more sensitive to light.  The photograph would be less grainy with today’s technology.

I anxiously awaiting for baseball season to begin, and hopefully I can share pictures of today’s SF Giants during batting practice at AT&T Park.

Die Hard Baseball Fan at Candlestick Park

Here’s a dedicated Baseball Fan who was scorekeeping at a cold night SF Giants vs LA Dodgers Baseball game at Candlestick Park on Tuesday, April 17, 1990. He stayed to the end of the game as the Giants were trailing the Dodgers 10-5 in the middle of the 9th inning when the picture was taken. The Dodgers had just pushed across 4 runs in the top of the 9th. The Giants could not score any runs in the bottom of the 9th and ended up losing 10-5.

I took these photographs while I attended the Academy of Art University for a class project.

I wish I knew who this gentleman was.  I did ask permission to take his photograph.  He was a nice guy who enjoyed the game even though the Giants did not win.

If anyone know this dedicated SF Giants Baseball fan, please let me know who he is.  There is always a special connection between SF Giants fans and those of us who regularly attended games at Candlestick Park.  It would be nice to connect with someone who knows this happy fan!

Remember the Temporary Overflow Press Area at Candlestick Park?

Temporary Overflow Press Area that was setup in the Upper Reserve Area Behind Home Plate in the Upper Deck during the NLCS in 1989

Close-up Pictures of the Temporary Overflow Press Area

It was interesting to see how they installed the temporary wood tables for the press people

It was cool to see the 1989 technology with the Analog Dial Tone Phones and TV Monitors

View from the Temporary Overflow Press Area

Welcome to Candlestick Park for Game 4 of the National League Championship Series with the San Francisco Giants facing the Chicago Cubs.  The date was Sunday, October 8, 1989, and the weather was very comfortable on this Fall late afternoon.  It was such a big event that the Goodyear Blimp was flying over Candlestick Park for the game.

It was fun to photograph the additional temporary press area to accommodate the extra sports commentators.  There were no ushers or guards to keep fans away from the area.  If I were bolder, I could have went up closer to this area.  But I did not want to enter this area where I felt I did not belong.  Below this press area, there was a walkway where I set up a tripod to photograph.  This walkway was between the upper box and the upper reserve seats.  This press area was in upper reserve area behind home plate.

Notice there are parts of my press area photographs which are blurry – mostly the people.  Those were the days when we had to photograph with film.  Since the sun was setting in the late afternoon, I had to photograph with a slower shutter speed because I was using a slower speed film.  If I hand held my camera,  everything would be blurry.  But since I used a tripod, everything not moving in the picture was sharp.  I used a slower speed film to get richer colors and a sharper image.  When I used the tripod, I had to photograph quickly to stay out of other people’s way.

These press area photographs were the best that could be taken with the type of camera equipment, film, and lighting during this event in 1989.  Today, with my modern digital equipment, I could photograph better pictures at this location and circumstances due to the improvements 29 years later.  But of course, the Stick is gone, and I cannot go back to reshoot!  So even with the imperfections of these photographs, I’m glad I can look back at these photographs to remember my earlier experiences shooting at Candlestick Park.

Cheap Seats at Candlestick Park

Ticket Stubs Photographed on a general admission seat at Candlestick Park on May 20, 1988

Classic view of the general admission area in the foreground of Candlestick Park during a SF Giants game. You also can see the press box at the top of the stadium in the center of the photograph. The Giants played the Montreal Expos on this comfortable Friday night on May 20, 1988.

The cost of the general admission ticket was $2.50.  The general admission area was behind the fence.  There was a fence separating the general admission seats from the rest of Candlestick Park.  Fans who bought seats in this area were not permitted to walk past the fence to go to the other side of Candlestick Park.  The ushers did not allow anyone with a general admission ticket to leave the area.

Occasionally, I sat in the general admissions area.  Since I was restricted from going to the other areas of the Stick, I bought a 2nd ticket in the lower reserve area for this game.  I wanted to go to the other areas of the stadium to take pictures.  Lower reserve was not too far away from the general admissions area.  The 2nd ticket was only $8.00.

During the inning breaks, I went to the other areas of the stadium to take pictures.  At this game, I walked to the lower reserve behind home plate to take photographs of the scoreboard and the lights.  I also shot the rest of the stadium from this location.

It is interesting how it was so easy and cheap to buy tickets to watch the SF Giants, and how I could buy 2 tickets just for myself to enjoy roaming around the Stick.  It’s too bad cheap seats are just a good memory from the old days at Candlestick Park.

Close-Up of the Sony JumboTron at Candlestick Park in 1988

I spent endless hours photographing Candlestick Park.  I would roam all around the Stick before sitting down to enjoy the SF Giants games.

The Sony JumboTron was one of the highlights at Candlestick Park.  Of course, it is natural for all the fans to be focused on the JumboTron during the game to see the video highlights, News of the Day, and clips from movies.  But I went a step further in my photographs of the different perspectives of the JumboTron.

I’ve always liked large televisions even before our current big flatscreen televisions existed.  So I was drawn to the JumboTron since it was the ultimate big screen TV for that era.

I also loved photographing different aspects of lighting.  With the JumboTron, I focused from the bottom to the top and the different sides.  I used a 300 mm zoom lens to take the close up photographs of JumboTron.  The close-up photographs show the detail of the grid with the different lighting underneath.  The detailed structure of the JumboTron gave interesting patterns.  In photograph #10, I walked underneath the JumboTron to show what was underneath.

To be a good photographer means to examine your subject from top to bottom, from one side to the other side, and from inside to the outside.  I’ve learned to pay attention to the details.  Art can be found in these details.  Often times, we miss the art in the details.  Candlestick Park was a wonderful stadium for the SF Giants and the 49ers.  But it was also a place where I found fine art in this stadium’s details.

Did You Listen to the Polka Band at Candlestick Park?

This was a rare treat to listen to this Polka Band performs the pregame show in the stands before a night SF Giants game. It was fun to listen to them play their music, and they added a festive atmosphere to the old ballpark.

They were performing during batting practice as they moved around the stadium in the lower box section behind home plate.  Candlestick Park was not a picture perfect stadium. It did not have nice warm weather during night games and was often cold and foggy.  But the Stick did have a special charm like the Polka Band.

I took this photograph in the late 1980’s with a Canon camera using Kodak 35mm High Speed T-Max 3200 Black and White film which explains for the high amount of grain in the picture.  This film was necessary for the night games where there was less light, and I used this film for my SF Giants night game pictures.

Does anyone remember this Polka Band at Candlestick Park?   I would love to hear about your memories during this evening at the Stick.
