The SF Giants played the NY Mets on this warm sunny day on Saturday, May 14, 1988 at Candlestick Park. It was a popular promotion day, Fuji Photo Day, which allowed fans to go on the field before the game started.

I loved going to the Fuji Photo Days at Candlestick Park. It was one of my favorite promotions, since fans were allowed to walk on the well groomed field before the game began. I love the feeling of walking on the grass. It is a different sensation for me to walk on the baseball field compared to walking on ordinary grass.

This also was a rare day to attend a game with sunshine at the Stick. Normally, it was cold and foggy whenever I attended a SF Giants game. But this day was a warm and bright day.

It is wonderful that the stadium is filled with fans. Seeing a stadium with every seat occupied creates great energy and excitement.

One reason why I enjoyed going to Candlestick Park a couple of hours before a game is to have the freedom to shoot pictures without the huge crowds of people. I do not enjoy crowds. Crowds make me feel uncomfortable. I end up giving the right of way to people who are cutting in front of me as they are walking to their destinations. My wife can easily and quickly weave her way thru a crowd. She will stop to look back to see where I am behind her as I allow others to go in front of me.

Seeing all fans seated and excited about watching the game is the best scenario of a crowd for me. But of course, the time will come when everyone has to get up and go home. That event is what makes me uneasy.

As I reflect about my feelings whenever I am in a crowd, I realize my yielding to people in a crowd is ok as long as I can control my emotions. I do not need to be on any particular time schedule.  I do not have to be ahead of everyone.

Yielding to other people in life is a good thing.

Do I have to be the first in everything? Am I putting unnecessary stress by striving with other people.

Is it really that important for me to have everything my own way?

Burger King had an old commercial with their song “Have It Your Way”. Do you remember this old song? Refresh your memory by clicking on the below link.

Being in a “Full House” teaches us we do not always need to “Have It Our Way” Learn to yield and let others “Have it Their Way”.

Picture Perfect Day at Candlestick Park for SF Giants Game

It was a great game with a full house on Fuji Photo Day at Candlestick Park on Saturday, May 14, 1988. The Giants defeated the Mets 3-2 with Mike Krukow getting the win. The weather was fantastic this day with sunshine and a light breeze.

I took this picture so long ago that there were no digital cameras at the time. I used a Canon 35mm camera and shot with Kodachrome transparency film and scanned it. I am glad the image and colors held up over the years on the 35mm transparency.

Candlestick Park was almost like a another home for me to hang out in. It was the first stadium where I could easily go and watch the SF Giants play ball. I did not have to plan way in advance (as I have to do now) to attend a baseball game. I could just walk up to the stadium and buy a ticket.

Candlestick Park welcomed all of us to be a part of the games whether the SF Giants or the 49ers. We all felt comfortable attending games with our family and friends. Yes, the stadium was not perfect and became a little worn and old looking as time progressed. But it was a place where we could relax and enjoy a sports event.

Did you ever go and visit somebody’s home where you did feel comfortable? Or maybe you encounter new people and they make you uncomfortable for some reason? They could be not very friendly, or their personality does not fit with ours.

It is an amicable trait when you meet someone who is genuinely makes you feel at ease and relaxed. This is a good characteristic we each could strive to have.

How can we make others relaxed and at ease?

  • Be relaxed and don’t exhibit stress
  • Smile so others will smile
  • Ask a few questions but listen more
  • Be genuinely interested and empathic to others

Candlestick Park was a the stadium where we could practice these things with each other while having fun watching baseball or football. It helped us relaxed. It made us smile. It allowed us to talk or be quiet. It allowed us to have a good time with our family and friends.

Can we make others comfortable just as Candlestick Park made us comfortable?

Photos remind us of our old feelings!

Who was the biggest Free Agent to sign with the SF Giants?

The answer is one of baseball’s all time great, Barry Bonds. I took this photograph at Pacific Bell Park during Fuji Photo Day.

Barry Bonds signed with the Giants in 1992. The Giants were still playing at Candlestick Park. He was playing with the Pittsburg Pirates before becoming a free agent. He was the most sought after free agent available in 1992. He signed a record 6 year $43.75 million deal. The deal was orchestrated by Peter Magowan. He became the highest-paid player in baseball history. Barry Bonds played for the Giants for 15 years.

Barry Bonds played left field at Candlestick Park. Al Michaels, the ABC broadcaster for Monday night football, stated left field at Candlestick Park was one of the most expensive piece of real estate in any sports stadium during a 49’ers game in 1992. Al was referencing the large contract paid to Barry Bonds who would play in left field (the north end zone) of Candlestick Park for the 1993 season.

Here’s info about Barry Bond’s deal with the Giants

I was thinking about the Barry Bonds deal as the Giants are contemplating signing huge free agent Bryce Harper. Let’s see where Bryce Harper signs.

  • Sony JumboTRON at Candlestick Park
  • Fuji Photo Day promotion at Candlestick Park on Saturday, May 14, 1988

Do you remember the Sony JumboTron at Candlestick Park? The 2nd picture shows the JumboTron in the perspective of the baseball field. The JumboTron was sandwiched between 2 advertisement areas and to the right of scoreboard and announcements.

I enjoyed seeing the San Francisco skyline on the JumboTron. Also there was the bottom advertisement of the old electronics store – Matthew’s which was located on the top of the hill in Daly City.

We all heard Matthew’s advertisements on the radio. I remember hearing their constant ads on the old radio station – KFRC. Their slogan – Matthew’s – Top of the hill Daly City was drilled into our memories.

Matthew’s business has been gone for a while. But I’m glad I have these photographs to remind me about their famous slogan.

I occasionally tweet #PhotosRemember. We take lots of photographs with our cellphones now. We collect so many photos now – Do we even have time to look at them all? Find a few photos that remind you of something special. Try to find some place to display your memorable photos. Switch your photographs around every few months to enjoy different memories.

I’m thankful for the opportunity to post these Candlestick Park memories. Memories can easily fade. Enjoying old photos and sharing our stories will help us treasure these memories so much more.

I loved Fuji Photo Day at Candlestick Park on Saturday, May 14, 1988.  Fans were allowed on the field before the game to take pictures of the players and the ballpark.  I loved walking on the pristine and immaculate grass.  I wish I could have preserved a piece of the field to bring home.  Fuji Photo Day was one of my top favorite events at the Stick besides Opening Day and the Post Season games.

Fans were able to get on the field 2 hours before the game.  I wish AT&T Park would have a similar event now.  I would roam around and go crazy shooting photographs.

I do not remember who the gentleman is in this photograph. I really like his SF Giants shirt.  I am not sure if he was an usher.

The SF Giants player in the background is Joe Price.  He played for SF Giants from 1987 to 1989 as a left handed pitcher.   The SF Giants defeated the New York Mets 3-2 with Mike Krukow getting the win and Ron Darling taking the loss.

Just wondering if any other SF Giants fans who visited Candlestick Park also have good memories of the Fuji Photo Day events?  Please share any memories from this event too.  From my interaction on social media, I have heard how fans really treasure the fun moments at Candlestick Park.

This was a very popular event for fans at Candlestick Park. It allowed fans with cameras to go down on the field before a SF Giants game to meet and have pictures taken with Giants players. Here are the former players and mascot in the picture. Pitcher, Julian Tavarez (50), Shortstop, Rich Aurilia (35), and SF Giants Mascot Lou Seal.

I took this picture on Saturday, May 14, 1988.  It was Fuji Photo Day at Candlestick Park.  I love being on the stadium grass field.  I took this photograph towards the end of the pre-game event.  People are starting to come into the stadium for this game – SF Giants versus the New York Mets.  I tried to stay on the field as long as I could.  See the score board sign – “PLEASE LEAVE THE FIELD TODAY BY WAY OF THE STAIRWAYS & RAMPS….”.  There were hundreds of fans on the field.  So I lingered in the back of the crowd with this sign looming to tell me to leave.  You can see as I took this photograph that there is no one left on the field.   The ushers were nice and did not force me off the field.  I was pretty slow walking off the field.   I took as many shots as I could, and I was about the last fan to leave the field.

Please examine this photograph.  Can you see the letters in the upper deck behind center field?  It was so cool how these particular fans folded up the seat bottoms to show the letters.  Can you see METS?

DSCN0840 CopyBarry Bonds was warmly greeted by fans at the pre-game event, Fuji Photo Day at Pacific Bell Park on Saturday, June 28, 2003.  He was great with the fans and very friendly. He talked to many of them and shook their hands.

He had a good day at the plate as he went 1 for 3 with a home run off Barry Zito of the Oakland A’s in the 4th inning.  The Giants won the game 8-7.

DSCN0779 CopyFuji Photo Day was a great promotion day when fans who brought a camera were allowed to go on the field to meet players before the game started.  Andres (Big Cat) Galarraga was one of many fan favorites during the event.  He went 2 for 5 and scored a run during the game that followed the event and the SF Giants won 8-7 over the Oakland A’s.

I took the photograph with my Nikon E5700 digital camera holding it high above my head to get above the crowd of people to get a shot of the players.  It was hit and miss as I was not able to look through the view finder.  I had to estimate where the camera was aimed at and took as many pictures as I could in a short amount of time.  I used the on-camera flash to illuminate the players’ faces.  There were probably about 5000 fans on the field during the pre-game event.
