img242-dust-removed-copyThe SF Giants were warming up and taking batting practice 2 hours before a night game.  The sun was setting and had reached the upper deck of the stadium.  This was during the 1989 season which was 10 years before the Giants would play their last game at Candlestick Park.  The photograph was taken with my Canon EOS 620 35mm camera using Kodachrome 64 slide film.

I took this picture on Saturday, May 14, 1988.  It was Fuji Photo Day at Candlestick Park.  I love being on the stadium grass field.  I took this photograph towards the end of the pre-game event.  People are starting to come into the stadium for this game – SF Giants versus the New York Mets.  I tried to stay on the field as long as I could.  See the score board sign – “PLEASE LEAVE THE FIELD TODAY BY WAY OF THE STAIRWAYS & RAMPS….”.  There were hundreds of fans on the field.  So I lingered in the back of the crowd with this sign looming to tell me to leave.  You can see as I took this photograph that there is no one left on the field.   The ushers were nice and did not force me off the field.  I was pretty slow walking off the field.   I took as many shots as I could, and I was about the last fan to leave the field.

Please examine this photograph.  Can you see the letters in the upper deck behind center field?  It was so cool how these particular fans folded up the seat bottoms to show the letters.  Can you see METS?

img062 Kodachrome 5.88 Copy img022 Kodachrome 5.88 CopyThe top photograph shows the back section of the scoreboard in centerfield (National/American League scores with the Union 76 Logo.  I was coming down the stairs to the general admission area.  The bottom photograph shows the entire centerfield scoreboard including the Sony JumboTRON.  I was on the field during Fuji Photo Day on the third base side and was getting ready to head back up to the stands.  Both photographs were taken in May 1988 using Kodachrome 64 35mm slide film.

The camera was a Canon EOS 620 film camera.  Those were the days when you had to ration out your picture taking as you only had 36 exposures on a roll of film.  The slide film held up very well over the years as I had it stored in a cool dry area.  The color and details are still excellent when I scanned the transparencies on an Epson Flatbed scanner.

Candlestick Park – Matthew’s Top of the Hill Daly City Ad

img029 Kodachrome 5.88 CopyThis is the huge JumboTron with advertisements for Coca Cola, Ford Fever and the infamous local electronic store – Matthew’s located on “Top of the Hill Daly City”.  We would hear their advertisements always on the radio.

Here’s a commercial for this old store – Matthew’s Top of the Hill Daly City

This photograph was taken in May 1988 with Kodachrome 35mm slide film.

Notice the camera in the back of all the red chairs.  This is the centerfield camera for television broadcasts.

The fence on the right restricted the fans from going into the center back area of the stadium.

I went 2 hours earlier than game time to Candlestick Park.  I would roam around the stadium taking photographs.  This is why there is no one sitting in the seats.

These were the cheaper bleacher seats in section 44.  For general admission, tickets were $2.50.  I would often just go to the box office the day of the game at the stadium and buy my ticket.  Baseball was so easily available for everyone to watch live.  It was a wonderful time to be a San Francisco Giants fan.

Close Fly-by Maneuvers by the Blue Angel's at Fleet Week The precision and expert maneuvers by the Blue Angels during their air shows amazed me as I was shooting the Blue Angels at the San Francisco Fleet Week. How do these fighter planes move so close to each other and not collide or touch? I appreciate the great skill and expertise of the Blue Angels every time I watch their shows. Their dedication to be the best is an inspiration to me. How often do we feel discouraged about improving ourselves in a particular skill? For me – photography has evolved a lot from the beginnings of my career. Technology has greatly improved how photographs look. There are a variety of ways we can share our photos thru Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc. The internet has provided a different dimension in the way we see our world. Today’s world provides more ways we can express creativity. I am striving to find my own road to perfect my photography expertise. This photograph reminds me not to give up on how to create my art. Expertise takes time to develop. Keep striving to be your best at what you do.
