I am a California guy where our fall foliage is not as extensive. I am always anxious to travel to some place where saturated multi-colored fall foliage is an annual event.

A couple of years ago, I traveled to visit a good friend back east. We took a day trip to New Hampshire.

This tree trunk almost looks endless as it ascends up into the sky. I am curious how many colors could be in this multi-colored natural painting. The array of colors, shapes and patterns is a wonderful natural art.

I could have laid on the ground and kept staring at this natural display.

Often times we are racing thru our day doing work, taking care of responsibilities and the daily necessities of life.

Can we at least once a week take time to look up and around to see the natural art in our environment? Fall foliage is coming. Don’t miss out on this natural art which is always unique.

What is Real?

Why untouchedtcphotos? Why did I choose such a long name for our domain and business?

Once upon a time, I was searching for a major and college to attend. Academics did not come easily for me. I did not think I excelled in any subject.

I attended the College of San Mateo to do my undergraduate studies. When I went to visit China with my grandparents and relatives, I started taking photographs. It was fun and I tried to take as many photos I could though I was limited by the number rolls of film I had.

At the College of San Mateo, I had some great instructors – who taught me a lot. It was a turning point for me. I decided to enroll in the Academy of Art to get a degree in Fine Art Photography.

I also found a place where I could spend endless hours taking photos — Candlestick Park. You may have noticed my display of Candlestick Park photos on my blog.

But why “untouched”. Well we live in a world where it is hard to discern what is real and true. Are our news broadcasts projecting truth? What is the real color of someone’s hair? Do we even understand what is true in our individual circumstances. I think often we can be blind to our problems and short comings. We prefer to be the camel with our head in the sand.

I would like to show photos which are real. The color is as true as the quality of the camera and lens. I do not wish to “brighten” or “enhance” the pictures. I do remove the dust marks from my scanned Candlestick Park photos. I hope my skills as a photographer will improve to show you images which are true to the moment in time I shot the pictures.

This is a challenge for each of us to be genuine and real. Let’s not put up a false facade. Can we be transparent? Can we be “real”?

By the way, the “tc” in the domain name is for “Tony Chan”. I think the “photos” part of the name is obvious.

Let’s be real!

Chocorua Lake in New Hampshire in 2017

Last year, I visited my good buddy, Larry, at his new home in North Andover, Massachusetts.  I timed it so I could find Eastern fall foliage to shoot. One of my photography passions is shooting the wide spectrum of fall colors which is not as common in northern California.

So, Larry was patient and kind to chauffeur me around the surrounding areas in search of scenic fall foliage. We stumbled and found Chocorua Lake at the end of day in New Hamshire. I love the orange, gold, red and green colors in the leaves.

I always strive to shoot the photos with the light in the background.  It is ideal to shoot as the sun is setting since the light is more subtle.  One has to be quick to get the ideal light before the sunsets. The spectacular lighting is the key for your photographs.  Also utilizing the natural light to highlight your scene is essential. Also there is a certain glow in the leaves which makes this scene pretty.

Sunsets are great to experience. Hope this post will encourage plans for an outing to enjoy the special light at sunset and take some great scenic shots. Scenic photos are one time events to capture, since the exact scene is only temporary.

On a road trip a month ago on 10/13/17 with my buddy, Larry, we were in search of some elusive Red Sugar Maple Leaves and found some in New Hampshire. My timing was a little off as a lot of areas in New Hampshire were past the Fall Foliage Prime as most of the leaves were on the ground.

Absolutely wonderful Fall Foliage at this lake in New Hampshire. It was such a cool sight seeing so many Fall colors in one place. The weather was perfect as I enjoyed photographing the sunset and back-lit Maple leaves a few weeks ago.

I was walking in the woods at Rolling Ridge Conference Center in North Andover, MA, and spotted this fallen Maple leaf that had lodged itself between some tree branches. The sun was low on the horizon and highlighting the leaf on this warm Autumn mid-October afternoon a few weeks ago.

I was on a one day road trip with a good buddy of mine who moved from Redwood Glen, CA, to North Andover, MA.  I was staying with him for a week as he works at Rolling Ridge Conference Center in North Andover. We were in search of outstanding fall foliage scenery.  We had stopped at various spots, and so far we found good scenery.  But I was seeking a “perfect” fall foliage spot.

As we were driving, my buddy noticed this spot on the roadside.  Unfortunately, he missed the turn off since I was hesitant about the spot.  I was a little discouraged in our search.  It was getting later in the day, and I was afraid the lighting would not be right for the photographs.  But I’m glad we did turn back to see this fall array of colors with these few trees.  This was the outstanding scenery I was searching for.

Late afternoon sunlight lit up the Sugar Maple Leaves at the shores of Chocorua Lake in New Hampshire. The color, lighting, and setting were magical as there were at least four different color maple leaves when I looked up at the maple canopy.  My wife thought this was one tree.  Actually I only focused on this one trunk, but these branches belong to other trees.  This trunk is interesting with the various circles going up the tree.

The moral of the story is to never give up on a goal no matter how big or small it is.  Even when we are hesitant in our search, proceed on and pursue the ideas which we are doubtful about.  Goals can be reached in the most unexpected ways!
