I am fortunate to have watched the Giants at Candlestick Park, AT&T Park, Pac Bell Park, and now Oracle Park.

I went thru my photographs to compare the different Scoreboards at really the two ballparks.

Interesting to note – Candlestick Park’s scoreboard was simple. It did not display all the information that we see today. It may have been wider with the advertisements. The baseball stats were compacted into the space.

Pacific Bell Park’s scoreboard was probably the same as the AT&T’s scoreboard. The Pacific Bell Park sign is on the bottom of the scoreboard.

Did you notice there is an added structure surrounding and above the same San Francisco Giants clock where the signage for AT&T Park was displayed? There are a bunch flags waving on the top also.

Oracle Park’s new scoreboard is bigger. It looks like they added to the top structure for advertisements and got rid of the old name. The flags are still waving on top. They also added more advertisement on the side light posts. By moving the advertisement to peripherals, it provides more space in the center to nicely display the stats.

So which scoreboard do you prefer comparing the scoreboards thru the years? Hopefully the SF Giants will dominate in their scoring this season.

Who was the biggest Free Agent to sign with the SF Giants?

The answer is one of baseball’s all time great, Barry Bonds. I took this photograph at Pacific Bell Park during Fuji Photo Day.

Barry Bonds signed with the Giants in 1992. The Giants were still playing at Candlestick Park. He was playing with the Pittsburg Pirates before becoming a free agent. He was the most sought after free agent available in 1992. He signed a record 6 year $43.75 million deal. The deal was orchestrated by Peter Magowan. He became the highest-paid player in baseball history. Barry Bonds played for the Giants for 15 years.

Barry Bonds played left field at Candlestick Park. Al Michaels, the ABC broadcaster for Monday night football, stated left field at Candlestick Park was one of the most expensive piece of real estate in any sports stadium during a 49’ers game in 1992. Al was referencing the large contract paid to Barry Bonds who would play in left field (the north end zone) of Candlestick Park for the 1993 season.

Here’s info about Barry Bond’s deal with the Giants

I was thinking about the Barry Bonds deal as the Giants are contemplating signing huge free agent Bryce Harper. Let’s see where Bryce Harper signs.

DSCN0829 CopyPopular SF Giants pitching coach for the past 16 years is well liked by the players and fans.  He had a great career pitching for the Yankees, Giants, A’s, Blue Jays, and White Sox.  He began his career as a starter and converted to a reliever.  He has 82 wins and 252 saves.

DSCN0840 CopyBarry Bonds was warmly greeted by fans at the pre-game event, Fuji Photo Day at Pacific Bell Park on Saturday, June 28, 2003.  He was great with the fans and very friendly. He talked to many of them and shook their hands.

He had a good day at the plate as he went 1 for 3 with a home run off Barry Zito of the Oakland A’s in the 4th inning.  The Giants won the game 8-7.

DSCN0779 CopyFuji Photo Day was a great promotion day when fans who brought a camera were allowed to go on the field to meet players before the game started.  Andres (Big Cat) Galarraga was one of many fan favorites during the event.  He went 2 for 5 and scored a run during the game that followed the event and the SF Giants won 8-7 over the Oakland A’s.

I took the photograph with my Nikon E5700 digital camera holding it high above my head to get above the crowd of people to get a shot of the players.  It was hit and miss as I was not able to look through the view finder.  I had to estimate where the camera was aimed at and took as many pictures as I could in a short amount of time.  I used the on-camera flash to illuminate the players’ faces.  There were probably about 5000 fans on the field during the pre-game event.

DSCN0714 Copy DSCN0883 CopyThe photographs were taken on Fuji Photo Day on June 28, 2003, at Pacific Bell Park which was renamed AT&T Park.  The SF Giants played the Oakland A’s that day with Barry Zito getting the start for the A’s and Kirk Rueter starting for the Giants.  The Giants won the game 8-7 with Felix Rodriguez getting the win and Keith Foulke taking the loss for the A’s.

I took the pictures with my first digital camera, a Nikon E5700 model.  Digital cameras were new to me back then and I was pleased that I did not have to carry and constantly reload film in the camera but thought the image quality of film was still better than digital.  Digital photography has come a long way since then and now I am totally sold on it.
