Higher Ground at Candlestick Park in 1989

It was great climbing up high at Candlestick Park before a SF Giants game and looking down at the field.  I loved going early before a game and avoid the crowd to freely roam around the stadium. I do not enjoy crowds, so it was fun to enjoy the Stick before the fans arrived.

Looking down from the high advantage point to see the entirety of the stadium is always a great way to shoot no matter what you are aiming to capture. I always like the plaid and stripe patterns on the field. The classic red chairs were always a favorite of mine.

This is a good reminder how we all need to get to higher ground and look at the entirety of our life. Can we reflect to see the wide spectrum of our life – our relationships with spouse, family, and friends, our responsibilities, and how we influence the people in our life. Do we seek to increase our influence on people we know and do not know? Do we desire to seek new goals in life? What do we want to achieve in our life?

Seek higher ground!

What was on the Southside of Candlestick Park?

Do you remember the southern part of Candlestick Park. I took this shot in 1988.

I love looking at the design of the red pattern of the support beams circling the outside of the stadium.

The vintage cars in the parking lot remind us of this eta in the 80’s.

Notice the ramp which leads to other parking lot areas. It provided a safe ok walkway away from the moving cars.

Candlestick Park was a welcoming stadium. Tickets were affordable. I did not have to plan ahead to go to a game. I could spontaneously go to a game and just buy tickets to attend a SF Giants game.

Can we also learn to welcome people into our life? Are we accessible to people? Do we have walls preventing people into our lives? Do we share our experiences with others to encourage or help someone?

We can all learn from the legacy of Candlestick Park.

Exploring the Outer Rim at Candlestick Park in the Upper Deck

  • The view from Section 59 in the Upper Deck which is the furthest away from home plate.
  • You get a nice view of San Bruno Mountain off in the distance behind Candlestick Park.
  • Dave Dravecky Day at Candlestick Park on 10/5/91. SF Giants defeated LA Dodgers 4-0 with Trevor Wilson getting the win and Mike Morgan taking the loss.
  • These seats are usually empty for most games as they are very far away from home plate.
  • Enjoying the sunset and view of the hill at Bayview Park from Section 60.
  • These seats are just below the Football Press Box down the Left Field line.
  • Welcome to Section 5 behind Home Plate in the Upper Deck.
  • These seats are behind Home Plate in the Upper Deck.
  • These seats are at the top of Candlestick and as far away from Home Plate as you can get.
  • A view from the outer rim way far away.
  • Welcome to Section 55 in the Upper Deck beyond Left Field.
  • Welcome to Section 15 down the 1st Base Line in the Upper Deck with the setting sun.
  • Welcome to Section 3 in the Upper Deck behind Home Plate.
  • These seats are at the top of Candlestick Park behind Home Plate in the upper deck.

These are various photographs of the upper rim of Candlestick Park. As I was browsing my various Candlestick Park photos, I realized I had some interesting perspectives of the top row.

I was roaming around the top row of seats at the stadium and took these pictures from different locations. I enjoyed my solitude as I moved quickly around the seats trying to shoot as many pictures as I could. I was limited, since this was before digital cameras, and I was using film.

I loved being on the top row since the view was fantastic. You could see San Bruno Mountain and the hill in Bay View Park behind the football press box. Also I enjoyed looking down to see the field and the lower rows of seats.

My one regret for these photos is that I did not have an ultra wide angle lens. I used a 28 mm wide angle lens. If I had an ultra wide angle lens, then I could have taken more of the stadium in one shot. In my first shot, I would have been able to get the full stadium with a wider angle lens. My shots above were cut off due to the limitation of my wide angle lens.

But I did not know that one day Candlestick Park would be demolished. The lesson I learned is to make sure to take lots of photographs of places and people you love. Life is like a vapor and people, things, and places change or are gone. So take lots of pictures to keep the important moments. I’m glad I preserved Candlestick Park in my photographs.

Young SF Giants Fan at Candlestick Park

I was attending a SF Giants game at Candlestick Park in the late 1980’s with some co-worker buddies and saw this young fan who was quite a character. He was having fun during most of the game.  At this point, he was a little upset about something.  During most of the game, he was walking up and down the aisle with his bat.  Does anyone recognize this little young SF Giants Fan?

We were seated in the general admission area behind the left field fence. In 1994 they constructed new metal riser bleacher seats in front of this section. It reduced the total capacity of the ballpark but brought fans closer to the field.

I used Kodak 35mm T-Max 100 black and white film with a Canon camera and developed the film in my darkroom at home. When developing the film, it had to be completely dark with no light leaking in from under the door or else the film would have been ruined. I had to transfer the film in total darkness into a light proof film processing canister by touch with my hands.  Those were the days.

Detailed Views at Candlestick Park’s Scoreboard and Beyond in 1988

Main Scoreboard in Left Field

The photograph was taken at Fuji Photo Day. Some clever fans spelled out “Mets” on the upper deck seats by folding down specific chairs to show the word

#2 for Outs in the Inning lit up on the bottom of the Scoreboard

Very Close Up of Lights for the Scoreboard

Looking up at the Scoreboard from underneath

Walkway Under the Scoreboard

Behind the Left side of the Scoreboard that listed the NL and AL Scores

I was always curious what was behind the Scoreboard

Concrete Beams Behind the Scoreboard Supporting the Upper Deck

The Pattern of the Support Beams Caught my Eyes when I took this Photograph

I was always impressed with the scoreboard at Candlestick Park when I was a kid and as an adult when I went to SF Giants and 49’er games. It was very interesting to see the scoreboard up close and behind the board. All of the photographs taken underneath and behind the Scoreboard were taken in the General Admission area at Candlestick Park. Candlestick Park was a very unique and one of a kind stadium before it was torn down.

Candlestick Park before the Fans Arrived

Quiet and serene Candlestick Park on a sunny afternoon in 1991. The photograph was taken from the upper deck down the right field line before a night game. Candlestick Park used to be one of the largest capacity ballparks in Major League Baseball as it seated 62,000 people. I took the photograph using Kodak 35mm T-Max 100 black and white film with a Canon camera. T-Max 100 was my favorite bright daylight film as the grain was very fine.
